  BRIEF HISTORY OF THE TITAN ORGANISATION

1965

Commenced trading on 1 October 1965 when the Titan Plant Services Division was purchased from Wilkins and Davies Construction Co Limited. The two activities of the newly formed company were crane hire and buying, selling and reconditioning of used plant and equipment.

1971

Purchased Lower Hutt land which is now Head Office and Wellington branch operation. Allotted one-third share in the newly established Fiji Crane Hire Company, Titan Pacific Limited.

1972

Established a Wire Rope and Materials Handling Division.

1973

Purchased first large capacity crane - an NCK 1405 crawler crane of 70 tonne capacity.

1974

First branch established at New Plymouth - a crane hire operation.

1976

Awarded first significant crane hire contract - supply of all cranes for construction of Shell BP and Todd Oil Services Limited, Oaonui Gas Production Station. Sold shares in Titan Pacific Limited.

1977

Established Titan Cranes Limited, a new company formed to purchase the crane hire division of Titan Plant Services Limited. Purchased the Grove TM875 crane of 73 tonne capacity which was then the largest capacity hydraulic crane in New Zealand.

1978

Acquired the first agency for selling new equipment - P & H Cranes on behalf of Principal Harnischfeger Corporation (USA).

1979

Purchased crane hire division of Roebuck Construction in New Plymouth. Established Titan Cranes Christchurch branch with purchase from Ceramco of all assets of the Christchurch crane hire company - Nuttall Cranes Limited.

1981

Developed the Cranemaster Safeload Indicator, a safety device for cranes which is now widely used on all types of cranes in New Zealand and also in Australia, Asia and Pacific Islands.

1982

Awarded contract to supply 300 tonne capacity crane (in a joint venture with Sparrow Crane Hire U.K.) and rough terrain cranes for the construction of the Petralgas Methanol Plant in Waitara Valley. Construction of new Head Office building as a result of business expansion.

1983

In a joint Venture with Fletcher Construction and Morgan Equipment Co of USA (FTM) Titan was awarded a contract by Bechtel to supply, operate. Maintain and later sell the majority of the cranes and construction equipment required in construction of NZ Synthetic Fuels Corporation Gas to Gasoline Plant at Motounui in Taranaki. Awarded contract to supply cranes to UK firm, Davy International Projects to assist in construction of reformers at Motunui. Awarded crane hire contracts at NZ Steel, Glenbrook and NZ Refining Marsden Point construction sites.

1984

Purchased leasehold of New Plymouth branch property.

1985

Auckland branch of Titan Plant Service established at Wiri (relocated to Penrose in 1991 and finally Otahuhu in 1994).

1986

Wire Rope and Materials Handling Division sold to Cookes Consolidated Services Limited. Acquired the VME agency involving all Volvo, Michigan and Euclid earthmoving equipment. Purchased land at Birmingham Drive, Christchurch and built new branch facility for both Titan Companies.

1987

Awarded contract to supply crane hire requirements for all maintenance work at New Zealand Synthetic Fuels Corporation gas to gasoline plant at Motunui. This contract is still held. Awarded contract to supply all crane hire requirements for Shell BP Todd Oil Services Limited work in Taranaki, a contract we still retain

Volvo Construction Equipment Range

1988

Established Taupo branch to service the forestry industry for equipment sales and service.

1989

Acquired the Volvo Truck and Bus agencies for New Zealand.

1991

Completion of new sales office and parts warehouse at Lower Hutt on land purchased two years previously.
 
Volvo Truck Range

1992

Purchased the assets of Owens Cranes (formerly Charlton Cranes) to establish the Auckland branch of Titan Cranes.

1993

Purchased the property in Otahuhu formerly owned and occupied by W Stevenson & Sons Limited.

1994

Otahuhu property upgraded and Titan Plant Services truck, bus and construction equipment sales and Titan Cranes Auckland relocated to the one site.Titan Cranes Limited achieved ISO9002 Quality Standard.

1995

Purchased the business of Taupo Crane Hire Limited to establish the Taupo branch of Titan Cranes. Titan Cranes purchased a 200 tonne capacity all terrain crane - the largest road legal crane in New Zealand.

1998

Titan Plant Services Limited took over the operation of Transport Commercial (Auckland) Limited and established a truck and bus servicing facility at Onehunga, Auckland.

1999

Appointed New Zealand representatives for Champion Road Machinery by Volvo Construction Equipment.

2001

Current expansion and redevelopment of Titan Plant Head Office.
